( 0 Votes ) Joe Scalzo of the Youngstown Vindicator announced this morning that Youngstown State nabbed their fifth verbal commitment in the 2011 class this morning when Girard WR Landon Smith committed to become a Penguin. Smith is a Scout and Rivals 2 star recruit that had offers to Big Ten (Indiana), Big East (Syracuse), and MAC (Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Kent State, Ohio, Toledo) schools, as well as Eastern Illinois of the FCS Ohio Valley Conference.

ScoutingOhio.com rated Landon Smith the 64th best recruit in Ohio in the 2011 class. Check out the Landon Smith Recruiting Profile here on LetsGoGuins.com.

( 1 Vote ) Scout.com is reporting today that West Hill's Community College Safety Deionte Williams has signed to play with Youngstown State this fall. Deionte Williams is a native of Miami, FL where he played for one of the top high school programs in the state in Miami Northwestern High School. Coming out of high school, Williams was rated as one of the top defensive backs in the entire Sunshine State. Upon transferring to Miami Northwestern his senior year, a class credit failed to transfer over with him forcing him to attend a junior college. Williams is fully eligible academically and will have two years of eligibility available over the next three years.

Williams is 6'2" and weighs 195 pounds. According to Rivals, Williams runs a 4.5 forty.

( 1 Vote ) Due to the interest in the result of today's 7 on 7 scrimmage, we decided to write a short article on the YSU vs. Akron scrimmage today. Due to NCAA rules, we do not believe the coaches of either program were involved in this 7 on 7 scrimmage whatsoever; we are of the belief that the players organized this event.

Yesterday afternoon, Youngstown State tied the Akron Zips in a pre-season 7 on 7 scrimmage in Akron. Although we cannot confirm a score, an Akron Zips fan is reporting that the Zips scored 6 touchdown's in the contest, which means the Penguins scored 6 touchdown's as well. We do not have any stats from the contest and do not anticipate hearing any either.

In closing, we do want to stress that this is a pre-season 7 on 7 scrimmage which mean's there was no line present and no real contact involved.

( 3 Votes ) The Vindicator is reporting that Youngstown State has added two more Division 1 transfers to the 2010 roster. They are Cincinnati Wide Receiver Lynell Payne and Syracuse Punter/Kicker Jake Smith.

Lynell Payne is a Scout 3-star and Rivals 2-star wide receiver from Marlton, New Jersey. After being redshirted his freshman season, Payne played in just 1 game last season for the Big East Champions. Payne had previous offers to Clemson, Connecticut, Iowa, among others. Payne will have three years of eligibility for the Penguins.

Jake Smith is a sophomore punter/kicker from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In his only season with the Orange, Smith connected on 2 of 2 extra points against, while missing a 50 yard field goal against Penn State. In his senior year of high school, Smith averaged 41.8 yards per punt. Like Payne, Smith will have three years of eligibility with YSU.

The Vindicator will have more on these two transfers in Tuesday's paper.
