Youngstown State added yet another piece to their roster on Tuesday when Hempfield, PA shooting guard Nate Perry verbally committed to play for Youngstown State. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review named Perry the Player of the Year in Pittsburgh in 2010; scoring 1,662 points on the season, which equates to 23.1 points per game. In his junior year, Perry averaged 25.7 points per game.Perry, 6'3" 190 pounds, was a previous commitment to Coastal Carolina of the Big South Conference before deciding last season to change his commitment to Appalachian State, of the Southern Conference.
ESPN.com said this of Perry, "Perry is an outstanding shooter with a quick release and good size for the two guard position. He can shoot in a variety of ways: spot up in transition, coming off screens or off the dribble." ESPN graded him an 84, which represents a high major prospect that has the potential to start or significantly contribute as a freshman for most top national Division I programs.
Nationally known basketball scout Bob Gibbons thought Perry was a major Division 1 prospect after an impressive showing at an AAU competition at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium last year.
Perry joins seven others in the 2010 Youngstown State recruiting class. The others include Kendrick Perry from Edgewater, FL, Josh Chojnacki of Erie, PA, DuShawn Brooks of Chicago, IL, Devonte Maymon of Middletown, WI, Shawn Amiker of Marshfield, MI, Tre Brewer of Long Beach, CA, and Fred Ford of Fort Wayne, IN. Due to these other scholarship commitments, Perry will be a preferred walk-on this season, with a good possibility of receiving a scholarship next season.
