Youngstown State added yet another piece to their roster on Tuesday when Hempfield, PA shooting guard Nate Perry verbally committed to play for Youngstown State. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review named Perry the Player of the Year in Pittsburgh in 2010; scoring 1,662 points on the season, which equates to 23.1 points per game. In his junior year, Perry averaged 25.7 points per game.Perry, 6'3" 190 pounds, was a previous commitment to Coastal Carolina of the Big South Conference before deciding last season to change his commitment to Appalachian State, of the Southern Conference.
ESPN.com said this of Perry, "Perry is an outstanding shooter with a quick release and good size for the two guard position. He can shoot in a variety of ways: spot up in transition, coming off screens or off the dribble." ESPN graded him an 84, which represents a high major prospect that has the potential to start or significantly contribute as a freshman for most top national Division I programs.
Nationally known basketball scout Bob Gibbons thought Perry was a major Division 1 prospect after an impressive showing at an AAU competition at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium last year.
Perry joins seven others in the 2010 Youngstown State recruiting class. The others include Kendrick Perry from Edgewater, FL, Josh Chojnacki of Erie, PA, DuShawn Brooks of Chicago, IL, Devonte Maymon of Middletown, WI, Shawn Amiker of Marshfield, MI, Tre Brewer of Long Beach, CA, and Fred Ford of Fort Wayne, IN. Due to these other scholarship commitments, Perry will be a preferred walk-on this season, with a good possibility of receiving a scholarship next season.

Despite some reports and posts on our forums that the proposed Battle for Northeast Ohio between Akron, Cleveland State, Kent State, and Youngstown State will not come to fruition this year, the Akron Beacon-Journal is stating otherwise. In an article from April 24th, the Beacon's Tom Gaffney wrote, "In other basketball developments, Dambrot said that Cleveland State and Youngstown State will be on the home schedule for the 2010-11 season."
We are going to try to work our sources to see if the match-up between Youngstown State and Kent State is still intact or not. According to one of our posters in our forums, the Kent State message board was stating YSU had backed out of the contract with them, which is something we cannot confirm. We will keep a close eye on this scheduling situation between those four schools for you, but for attendance reasons, we expect this four-way battle to take place this season.
