Let's Go Guins!

Joe Scalzo of the Youngstown Vindicator announced this morning that Youngstown State nabbed their fifth verbal commitment in the 2011 class this morning when Girard WR Landon Smith committed to become a Penguin. Smith is a Scout and Rivals 2 star recruit that had offers to Big Ten (Indiana), Big East (Syracuse), and MAC (Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Kent State, Ohio, Toledo) schools, as well as Eastern Illinois of the FCS Ohio Valley Conference.

ScoutingOhio.com rated Landon Smith the 64th best recruit in Ohio in the 2011 class. Check out the Landon Smith Recruiting Profile here on LetsGoGuins.com.

Scout.com is reporting today that West Hill's Community College Safety Deionte Williams has signed to play with Youngstown State this fall. Deionte Williams is a native of Miami, FL where he played for one of the top high school programs in the state in Miami Northwestern High School. Coming out of high school, Williams was rated as one of the top defensive backs in the entire Sunshine State. Upon transferring to Miami Northwestern his senior year, a class credit failed to transfer over with him forcing him to attend a junior college. Williams is fully eligible academically and will have two years of eligibility available over the next three years.

Williams is 6'2" and weighs 195 pounds. According to Rivals, Williams runs a 4.5 forty.

JUCO Highlight Tape

Here is an article highlighting the 2010 Youngstown State Men's Basketball Recruiting Class. Although we understand football is king at Youngstown State, we believe that once you read up on these recruits signed by Coach Jerry Slocum, you will be as hopeful as we are for the future of the basketball program.

1. Kendrick Perry
Orlando, FL | Edgewater High School
6'1" 155 Pounds | PG

Kendrick Perry is a 6'1" point guard from Edgewater High School in Orlando, FL. This past season he led his team to deep into the Florida 6A Tournament before falling to the #1 team in Florida, Winter Park in the Regional Championship. Two weeks prior to that loss, Perry nailed a game winning three pointer to defeat Winter Park, #15 in America, 73-71 in the early rounds of the 6A tournament. On the season, Perry averaged 16 points per game, in addition to 8 assists per game, all while scoring a weighted 4.2 GPA in the classroom.

2. Nate Perry *Preferred Walk-On*
Hempfield, PA | Hempfield Senior High School
6'3" 190 Pounds | G

Nate Perry is a 6'3" shooting guard from just across the border in Hempfield, PA. This past season, Perry was named the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Most Valuable Player in Western Pennsylvania after averaging 23.1 points per game for Hempfield on the season. Perry is a previous commitment to Coastal Carolina University of the Big South and Appalachian State University of the Southern Conference. ESPN.com graded Mr. Perry an 84 on a 100 point scale, which translates into a solid Division 1 prospect. Well known basketball scout Bob Gibbons believed that Perry could play for most major Division 1 programs after he put on a tremendous performance at an AAU competition at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium this time last season. Perry will be a preferred walk-on his freshman year at Youngstown State, but it is expected he will quickly earn a full scholarship come his sophomore year on campus once Vytas Sulskis and Dan Boulder graduate next spring.

3. Josh Chojnacki
Erie, PA | Mercyhurst Prep
6'9" 220 Pounds | C

Josh Chojnacki is a 6'9" center from nearby Erie, PA where he attended Mercyhurst Prep. Chojnacki is the first recruit in recent memory recruited by Jerry Slocum at the center position on the basketball court. Last season, Chojnacki averaged 21.6 points per game and 11 rebounds per game earning him the Most Valuable Player Award in Northwest Pennsylvania by the Erie Times-News.

4. Shawn Amiker Jr.
Marshfield, MI | Marshfield High School
6'4" 175 Pounds | G

Shawn Amiker Jr. is a 6'4" shooting guard from Marshfield, MI. In his senior season at Marshfield High School, Amiker averaged 20 points, 4 assists, and 10 rebounds per game. The Oakland Press, a newspaper near Detroit, rated Amiker the 3rd best wing in the Detroit Metropolitan Area last season.

5. Fred Ford
Fort Wayne, IN | Vincennes University (JUCO)
6'0" 175 Pounds | G

Fred Ford is one of four junior college transfers in the 2010 recruiting class. Ford is a native of Fort Wayne, IN and is transferring in from Vincennes University in Vincennes, IN. Last season Ford averaged 13.5 points, 4.9 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game. Ford shot 37% from the field, 36% from 3 point range, and an impressive 81% at the free throw line.

6. Devonte Maymon
Middleton, WI | John A. Logan Community College (JUCO)
6'2" 180 Pounds | G

Devonte Maymon was a highly touted recruit coming out of high school in Wisconsin before he decided to attend the John A. Logan Community College in Carterville, IL. In his sophomore season at John A. Logan Community College, Maymon averaged 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists per game. Maymon shot 47% from the field, 40% from 3 point range, and 70% from the free throw line. His father Tim Maymon said Devonte chose Youngstown State over Southern Utah, Tennessee-Martin, Texas Christian and Morehead State (Ky.). He also had a Division II offer from Kentucky Wesleyan.

7. DuShawn Brooks
Chicago, IL | Butler County Community College (JUCO)
6'6" 205 Pounds | F

Brewer shot 63% from the free throw line and was named to 1st Team All Conference. Brewer helped lead SBVC to a 31-3 season and a conference championship.

9. Michael Podolsky *Preferred Walk-On"
Canfield, OH | Canfield High School
6'2" 205 Pounds | G

Michael Podolsky will be walking on, we believe, from Canfield High School this season. Podolsky is a local kid that averaged 20 points per game last season for the Canfield Cardinals. He was named an All State Honorable Mention in Division 1 this past season. According to the Vindicator, Podolsky completed his high school career as Canfield’s second all-time leading scorer (940) and holds single-game records for points scored (41) and field goals made (17).

Youngstown State added yet another piece to their roster on Tuesday when Hempfield, PA shooting guard Nate Perry verbally committed to play for Youngstown State. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review named Perry the Player of the Year in Pittsburgh in 2010; scoring 1,662 points on the season, which equates to 23.1 points per game. In his junior year, Perry averaged 25.7 points per game.

Perry, 6'3" 190 pounds, was a previous commitment to Coastal Carolina of the Big South Conference before deciding last season to change his commitment to Appalachian State, of the Southern Conference.

ESPN.com said this of Perry, "Perry is an outstanding shooter with a quick release and good size for the two guard position. He can shoot in a variety of ways: spot up in transition, coming off screens or off the dribble." ESPN graded him an 84, which represents a high major prospect that has the potential to start or significantly contribute as a freshman for most top national Division I programs.

Nationally known basketball scout Bob Gibbons thought Perry was a major Division 1 prospect after an impressive showing at an AAU competition at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium last year.

Perry joins seven others in the 2010 Youngstown State recruiting class. The others include Kendrick Perry from Edgewater, FL, Josh Chojnacki of Erie, PA, DuShawn Brooks of Chicago, IL, Devonte Maymon of Middletown, WI, Shawn Amiker of Marshfield, MI, Tre Brewer of Long Beach, CA, and Fred Ford of Fort Wayne, IN. Due to these other scholarship commitments, Perry will be a preferred walk-on this season, with a good possibility of receiving a scholarship next season.

Here is a highlight tape of Perry in action:
